Funeral Service will be 11:00a.m., Thursday at United Methodist Church in Eveleth. Pastor Dorothy Bull will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00p.m.-8:00p.m. Wednesday in Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home Chapel, Eveleth and will continue for one hour before services at the church. A family interment service will be in Eveleth Cemetery.
Alice J. Nettell, 91, of Eveleth, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at the Virginia Convalescent Center. She was born on December 15, 1918 in Virginia to Joseph W. and D. Jean (Smith) Hejda. Alice graduated from Virginia High School in 1936, Virginia Jr. College in 1938 and Richmond Professional Institute in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Group Work. She was married to Lyle K. Nettell in Eveleth on August 21, 1944. Alice worked as a social case worker for the St. Louis County Welfare Department from 1941-1946. She later went to work as the Occupancy Supervisor/Manager and later Executive Director for the Housing & Redevelopment Authority in Virginia from 1952-1985. She also worked part-time as the Executive Director of the Housing & Redevelopment Authority of Eveleth from 1958-1970.
Alice was a member of the United Methodist Church of Eveleth; a past or current member of Soroptimist International of Virginia (charter member); Mesabi Family YMCA Board; St. Louis County Safety Council; Chapter Board of the American Red Cross and of its East Range Regional Board; a charter member of Elder Services Network; Central St. Louis County Cancer Board; PEO; Eveleth Women’s Club; Order of the Eastern Star (65 years) and past Worthy Matron of Eveleth Chapter; Salvation Army Advisory Board; Long-Term Care Task Force and Home Care Advisory Committee of the Virginia Regional Medical Center and other activities too numerous to mention.
She is survived by her daughter, Lyndie (Jean-Marc) of St. Bruno, Quebec; three grandsons, Eric, Denis and Stephane (Amelie); two great grandchildren, Alexa and MacKenzie all living in Quebec; many nieces and nephews and her special friend, Stanley Vejtasa.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lyle in 1983; sister, Louise Toness and brother, Jed Hejda.
The family prefers memorials to Eveleth United Methodist Church or to a charity of your choice.
